Norman J. Poff was born on March 9, 1941, on a hilltop overlooking Kenova, West Virginia, where he grew up as one of eleven children in a deeply humble farming family. Raised in an environment shaped by hardship, resilience, and survival, his early life was defined by hard work on dirt farms, where the family relied on hand tools, foraging, and sheer determination to make it through each day.
Without modern conveniences or transportation, life demanded endurance. Walking long distances for school and daily needs was routine, and every member of the family contributed to sustaining their way of life. Despite extreme poverty and periods of instability—including times of homelessness—these formative years built the foundation of strength, perseverance, and grit that would later define his journey.
At the age of thirteen, Norman stepped into independence early, eventually leaving home and navigating life on his own. Through years of hard labor and self-discovery, he forged a path that led him to serve in the United States Army, enlisting in July 1960 as a communications specialist. His service included work at the 8th Army Communications Center in Seoul, South Korea, in a Top Secret capacity.
From a childhood shaped by struggle to a life defined by service and resilience, Norman’s journey reflects endurance, transformation, and the power of persistence against all odds. Today, he brings those lived experiences into his writing, offering readers stories grounded in authenticity, depth, and real human strength.
